Day 3

Welcome to day 3!

Today we will start the practice of Breath of Fire. To do this you inhale and push the belly out and then pull the belly in to exhale, release the belly to let the air in and pull the belly in to let the air out. This is a powerful energising breath, as a beginner you should be pulling the belly in every 1-2 seconds. This can be a challenging breath at first, so if you are finding it difficult don't worry; watch the extra video I have made that breaks it down even further. If you are pregnant or on the first two days of menstruation please do a lighter breath such as long, deep breathing.

We will also explore the effect of Left Nostril Breathing. To do this breath you block off the right nostril with the right thumb and inhale and exhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril. If your left nostril is blocked you can release the right nostril and do long, deep breathing instead. Combining these two breaths will balance your practice; Breath of Fire is energising and stimulating and Left Nostril Breathing is calming and relaxing.

Breath of Fire - Increases lung capacity, improves cardiovascular function, energises and oxygenates the body, boosts mental function, focuses the mind.

Left Nostril Breathing - Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers the heart rate, reduces stress, improves sleep, improves digestion, clears the mind, improves sense of well-being.

If it helps, slow the breath down and put your hands on your belly, this way you can feel the movement of the breath, then when you get the hang of it you can speed it up.

Experiment with using it through out the day to give yourself a burst of energy!
